Daltokki

A Korean restaurant and bar named for the rabbit Koreans see in the moon.

Type
Restaurant & bar
Year
2021
Context
Commercial Design Studio B, BCIT

Where western folklore sees a man in the moon, Korean folklore sees a rabbit pounding rice cake. The whole room is built on that, an aged brass moon as signage, and bamboo louvres drawn from the timber lattice of hanok windows.

The lattice does what it does in a hanok: divides without closing. You can see that someone is on the other side of it without seeing who.
